RFK Jr bans thiomersal from influenza vaccines in “safety” move

The US health secretary, Robert F Kennedy Jr, has banned the mercury based preservative thiomersal (known in the US as thimerosal) from all influenza vaccines distributed in the US.

Justifying the move, Kennedy claimed that the ban would enhance public confidence in immunisation.1

Thiomersal is used only in multidose vials of the influenza vaccine in the US and accounted for only about 5% of adult influenza vaccine doses in the last flu season. The substance is added to prevent contamination of multidose vials with bacteria or fungi each time individual doses are drawn.
