A pregnant woman in the US who has been declared brain dead is being kept on life support because of worries over abortion laws in her state that may require doctors to preserve the life of the fetus—now at about 22 weeks and with a heartbeat.
Adriana Smith, a 30 year old nurse and mother of a 5 year old son, is receiving life support in Emory University Hospital Midtown in Atlanta, Georgia.1 She is expected to give birth by caesarean section on 11 August. It is not clear what will happen to her after that.
