Doctors refusing to use “untried and untested” artificial intelligence (AI) software at work will be supported by the BMA.

“Trusts, GP surgeries, and doctors must not be forced to use AI,” said Samuel Parker, who proposed the motion on behalf of the BMA’s Gateshead division at the union’s recent special representative meeting.

Parker voiced concerns about “inaccurate and fabricated information” generated by AI tools, and the need to have “security systems in place to protect patients’ sensitive information.”

The shift from analogue to digital is a key priority in the government’s 10 year health plan, which has pledged to make the NHS “the most AI enabled health system in the world.”12 A number of AI tools are already being used, such as ambient scribes in GP consultations,3 AI assisted discharge summaries,4 and AI interpretation of radiological imaging.56 General Medical Council advice for doctors using AI at …
