Akhil Chandra Biswas, consultant paediatrician, former international adviser to the Royal College of Physicians, and former professor, has sadly died after a prolonged struggle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. He leaves his wife, Sadhana, and two adult children.

A compassionate scholar

Akhil Biswas, or Andy, as he was affectionately called by colleagues and friends in the UK, was dedicated to the science and work of paediatric care. Born in pre-independence India, he was the first member of his family to make it to university. His hard work and singleminded determination saw him complete his graduate degree from the prestigious Calcutta Medical College on a state scholarship in 1971 before continuing on to gain his doctorate in 1977 on a national scholarship. …
