Bariatric surgeries rise among US teens, as adult numbers fall

Rates of metabolic and bariatric surgeries (MBS) rose by almost 15% in teenagers in the US between 2021 and 2023, despite falling in adults, new research has found.

The cross-sectional analysis, published in the Journal of Paediatrics,1 reported that the increase was largely driven by non-Hispanic black and Hispanic adolescents—a population disproportionately impacted by severe obesity and related cardiometabolic health problems, likely mirroring broader systemic inequities.
