bmj;384/feb09_8/q336/FAF1faJohn Humphrey Wilfred Shaw studied at St John’s College, Cambridge, joining the medical college of St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London in 1953. He gained a Shuter scholarship in 1953 and won the Matthews Duncan gold medal and prize in obstetrics in 1956. After various junior hospital appointments, he did his national service in Germany as a medical officer to the Queen’s Royal Irish Hussars. He settled as a GP in Redhill, where he worked for 34 years in the Hatchlands Road practice; from 1985 he was the managing partner. John retired in 1997 and subsequently attended literature classes and did research, publishing several articles associated with the poem Luriana, Lurilee quoted in Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse. He leaves three children and six grandchildren.
