New NHS obesity service to provide access to weight loss injections in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland will open its first specialist weight management service next year, which will provide access to obesity drugs such as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, health minister Mike Nesbitt has announced.1

The first phase, to start in early 2026, will focus on developing a community based service where patients can access lifestyle support and weight loss drugs including semaglutide (Wegovy, Rybelsus). Currently, patients in Northern Ireland cannot access weight loss injections or specialist weight loss management services through the NHS.
