The government has set out plans to formally regulate senior NHS managers, including banning those who commit serious misconduct from taking up other senior roles in the health service.
The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) said the proposals are designed to improve patient safety and support whistleblowers.
A new statutory “barring system” will be introduced for board level directors and their direct reports in NHS bodies. Further legislation will give new statutory powers to the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)—the body that regulates 15 other health and care professions—to disbar NHS leaders in senior roles who have committed serious misconduct.
NHS England managers will also have to uphold new professional standards “alongside support and development,” under the proposals.
