All UK medical school graduates should be guaranteed a foundation programme training post and should be prioritised for specialty training posts over international medical graduates (IMGs), BMA representatives have urged.
A motion passed at the BMA’s annual representatives meeting on 25 June stated that, while IMGs were a “valued part of the UK’s medical workforce,” there were concerns over the “exponentially increasing competition ratios for speciality training, driven primarily by overseas recruitment.”
The motion continued, “This meeting therefore condemns the government’s failure in workforce planning which has left many medical students and residents in the UK in the untenable position of facing unemployment in the near future.”
The meeting called on the education bodies of the four UK nations and the Department of Health and Social Care to “introduce a process for medical speciality training recruitment where UK medical school graduates are offered posts first before any unfilled posts are opened to all other applicants.”
