The government has shelved reform of social care funding as part of spending announcements made on 29 July, prompting widespread criticism from health representatives.
In a speech in the House of Commons, Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves said that the government had inherited a £22bn hole in the public finances. To tackle this, she was taking several steps to reduce pressure on public finances by £5.5bn this year and more than £8bn next year.
One such step was to drop a Conservative Party policy to cap social care costs and plans to build 40 hospitals.
